Wardell Armstrong Features on BBC2’s Digging for Britain
Did you see us on BBC2’s ‘Digging for Britain’?
The programme, which featured our work on the largest Roman Bathhouse ever to be discovered along Hadrian’s Wall, was aired January 2nd on BBC2.
The episode, which saw presenter Professor Alice Roberts visit our site in Carlisle last year, includes interviews with Technical Director Frank Giecco, and Archaeologist Jo Beaty, and features the discoveries of two large and very unusual, sculpted heads – thought to be local versions of Roman theatre masks and gemstones from fingers rings, coins, stone inscriptions and lead seals.
Graduate Development Days
We’ve had a great time welcoming some of our Graduates from across our UK offices and from a range of service areas to our Head Office in Stoke-on-Trent for our ‘Graduate Development Days’.
The days included presentations on career development and progression, commercial awareness, and adapting to your audience with presentation skills – followed by informal, internal networking over a meal and drinks.
In-House Core Logging Training
Members of our Ground Engineering team at our Head Office in Stoke-on-Trent recently attended a preliminary training course on core logging led by Technical Director, Richard Lowman. Topics included drilling techniques, site supervision, the effects of drilling on core quality, logging standards, Rock Quality Designation, core loss assessment and trouble-shooting issues.

Kingsnorth Green Development of 550 Homes Allowed at Appeal
Over 500 homes in Ashford, Kent have now been granted planning permission following an appeal on the grounds of non-determination!
Wardell Armstrong undertook the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the residential development, undertaking a range of environmental assessments including Ecology, Archaeology & Heritage, Landscape & Visual, Noise & Vibration, Air Quality, Land Use & Soils, Ground Conditions, Water Resources, Climate Change, Flood Risk and Arboriculture.

World Town Planning Day 2023
8th November marks World Town Planning Day when planners and communities across the world come together to celebrate how good planning can improve the lives of people and benefits society, creating places to live, work and play together. This year’s theme is ‘Learn Globally, Apply Locally’ and focusses on the value of learning from planning and different planning cultures globally, developing innovative, sustainable and equitable solutions to address global challenges.
Medieval Origins Discovered in Lowton, Greater Manchester
Prior to the proposal of a new housing development at a site at Heath Lane Lowton in Greater Manchester, Wardell Armstrong was commissioned to undertake a series of archaeological investigations by Bloor Homes. Services included a geophysical survey, evaluation trenching and targeted excavation.
Dogger Bank Connects to the National Grid!
Earlier this month, the world’s largest offshore wind farm under construction, Dogger Bank, was connected to the National Grid and started to produce electricity for the first time for British homes and businesses. A single rotation of one of the 107m long blades on Dogger Bank’s first operational turbine can produce enough clean energy to power an average British home for two days. This is a huge milestone in the development of the offshore wind industry and the transition to a cleaner and more secure energy system.
Wardell Armstrong is proud to have been a part of this project’s success by working with our client Hitachi since 2020. Our multidisciplinary services on the ‘Converter Station’ parts of the project, (Dogger Bank A, B and C) which are the facilities that convert the electricity from direct current (DC) into an alternating current (AC) include:
Wardell Armstrong Help’s to Prepare the Next Generation of Engineers for Industry
Renewables Engineering Director, Adian Harber and Technical Director Jane Clarkson recently visited Newcastle University to undertake mock job interviews with some of the 4th year MEng in Civil Engineering students.
The aim of the mock interview exercise was to help prepare the students for ‘real life’ interviews, which will support them in a smoother transition into industry careers once they have graduated from university.
