Low carbon renewable energy generation is pivotal to the Government’s industrial and energy strategies. Wardell Armstrong has extensive experience in the development of renewable energy and storage technologies together with the factors that influence a just transition to low a carbon heat and power economy, required to achieve Carbon Net Zero. The National Planning Policy Framework identifies a specific responsibility for all local authorities to increase the generation and supply of renewable energy generation, while maintaining the protection of the environment and the safeguarding of local communities. From the first renewable energy developments in the UK, Wardell Armstrong has successfully assisted and advised our clients to deliver projects across the UK and Internationally. Our energy team has experience of the full spectrum of technologies, including wind, geothermal, solar PV, biomass (including AD), tidal, CHP and energy from waste projects. Our experience includes all aspects of project development vital to achieving innovative and workable solutions across the range of technology platforms.

Our team has many years of experience in assessing the feasibility of renewable energy projects. We use GIS to assist our clients in site finding for single or multiple prospective sites, throughout the UK and Ireland, which provides a rapid assessment of technical, engineering and environmental risks and benefits. The data is used to progress both design of the power generation technology in combination with site characteristics and a detailed understanding of the assessment of environmental and social effects. We have extensive experience of the desk based and field studies that would be required to progress the design of the renewable technology through to construction.

Our team of specialists can inform the design process, provide an early indication of potential mitigation measures across the full range of environmental and social aspects, which are essential to good quality design and analysing the viability of these measures in the feasibility study. Our experience spans all types of renewable energy generation, on behalf of developers, landowners, banks, international financial institutes and private clients.

Decentralised and locally based generation has increased participation for developers to integrate renewable energy into future business planning. Our specialist team have experience of, and can assist with, feasibility and financial assessments for all types of energy development, focussing on onshore wind and solar pv. We can prepare an assessment of the economics of adding private wire utilising renewable energy generation to existing properties, estates and industrial processes to reduce costs, maximise revenue and to minimise risk associated with exposure to volatile energy prices. Our team has also worked with master planning designers to secure opportunities for local generation, to prepare the financial analysis, associated with the technology mix of adopting this approach.

Design of renewable energy systems is essential from the onset of the project. At Wardell Armstrong we model and provide bespoke resource assessment for renewable energy projects. We are experienced in assessing the existing power use of a business, estate or other consumer to predict future electricity and heat loads. We advise on the energy source, or multiple energy options required for the load profile with the aim of maximising the return on investment in renewable technologies. Our Civil and Structural team provide engineering advice from the concept design through to detailed construction drawings and have recent experience with onshore wind, solar pv, access track design, Energy from Waste and Anaerobic Digestion.

Our experience comprises the following:

  • Site design and layout – solar pv and onshore wind
  • Utilities assessment / Grid connections
  • Wind turbine foundation design
  • Client and site engineer

Our team work on all phases of project development from initial policy advice and planning applications, through to construction. We have recent experience in the preparation of planning statements, technical submissions in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework. Our planning team can assist with all aspects of planning required for the development of renewable energy technologies. We can provide input to the initial pre-application discussion with the Local Planning Authority, advise on project screening and scoping, formulating and presenting information for stakeholder engagement and preparation of planning application documents.

Environmental and social assessments are vital for all energy related development projects and our specialist team have experience of all the individual topic specific studies for development of renewable energy technologies. We have experience in the management of studies required for Environmental Impact Assessment, including the preparation of specialist discipline specific studies for complex developments. Wardell Armstrong are also experienced on the specialist input required to prepare Development Consent orders (DCO) for >50MW projects in England, and Energy Infrastructure submissions for similar sized projects in Scotland and Wales.

Our dedicated energy team provides the technical and engineering input to advance concepts through to the detailed designs required for planning submissions and construction. Our team are experienced in the preparation of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments of energy generation projects to conform with International Performance Standards required by World Bank, the EBRD and all Equator Principle banks and finance institutions.

Wardell Armstrong engineers and environmental specialists provide support to developers and contractors throughout the construction phase of renewable energy developments. We have recent experience of being retained as client’s engineer and provision of archaeological, ecological clerk of works and can also provide peat and hydrological specialists required for certain development projects.

Our environmental specialists can prepare the site-specific Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and provide an independent audit and review of these management plans. Wardell Armstrong has worked on a range of projects from single small projects to large complex, multifaceted development both within the UK and Internationally.
