Wardell Armstrong Win a Marsh Community Archaeology Award

*18/07/2022 UPDATE – WE WON*

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) and Marsh Charitable Trust have announced the shortlist for the 2022 Marsh Community Archaeology Awards – which are part of the CBA’s Festival of Archaeology. The awards showcase excellence in archaeology, celebrating the passion and dedication of individuals and the outstanding contribution of archaeology projects which create social, cultural and environmental benefit.

‘Uncovering Roman Carlisle’ has been shortlisted for the ‘Community Project of the Year’ award! The project was developed by Wardell Armstrong in partnership with Carlisle City Council, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and Carlisle Cricket Club, and was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The excavation, at Carlisle Cricket Club, was undertaken in August and September 2021 following the discovery of what is now known as the largest known building on Hadrian’s Wall. Our archaeologists catalogued over 700 finds, and more than 1,100 days were given by volunteers. The funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund helped to support an 18-month programme which included the community archaeological investigation, exhibitions, and engagement exploring Carlisle’s Roman remains. A pop-up exhibition is currently on tour around the Carlisle area, and tells the story of Carlisle’s Roman bathhouse, and of the community of volunteers and professionals who made this exciting project possible.

We are delighted that our project and volunteers are thought of so highly, and amongst such notable company – congratulations to the other shortlisted projects: Caistor Roman Project and Caught in a Tudor Web.

The winner will be announced at the launch event of the CBA’s Festival of Archaeology at Segedunum Roman Fort in Newcastle this Saturday the 16th July.
