The Lower Swansea Valley Project Secures £20 Million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Scheme

The Lower Swansea Valley (LSV) project has secured £20 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Scheme. The project focuses on the site of the former Hafod Morfa Copperworks.

Regeneration and development of the LSV is a celebration of over 300 years of heritage. Swansea Council’s mission for LSV is to unlock the potential of these historic buildings and invite the public to enjoy the significant history of Swansea. This scheme is part of the longer-term ambition for the wider Hafod and Morfa Copperworks area to be viewed as one significant destination and to act as a catalyst for regeneration, resulting in economic growth, improved connectivity, increased vibrancy and a focus on sustainable construction.

The key objectives are to work with the historic buildings, not against them, and to carefully integrate the best in contemporary design with the sensitive repair and restoration of the historic fabric, whilst assigning suitable, yet commercially sustainable use to the buildings. The approach is also to provide connectively through the wider Hafod Morfa Copperworks site and the rest of the city, providing safe public spaces, opportunities for local businesses and to attract greater footfall to the area.

Wardell Armstrong were pleased to provide a number of multidisciplinary services for the project, including ecology, project management, planning, heritage & archaeology, noise, landscape, ground engineering, flood consequence assessment, SuDS, CDM, health & safety, stakeholder engagement, arboriculture, utilities and transport.
