Urban Science Building (USB), Science Central
Newcastle University is investing £58m in the state-of-the-art facility to lead international research into urban sustainability.
Wardell Armstrong, acting as sub-contractor to lead designer Ryder Architecture, provided hard and soft landscape design and detailing services as part of Bowmer & Kirkland’s construction phase design team. Unique to the project has been the design, in close consultation with the University’s academic team, of the proposed experimental features including a 130m long swale with the facility to artificially flood, a 90m long trench to research ‘CIRIA‘ strategy and 10 Lysimeter units.
The USB was one of the first projects in the UK to be delivered to BIM Level 2 and won the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Award for Design through Innovation, Lord Mayor’s Design Award and was shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Awards for the North East Regional Award.
