Gabalfa School and Ysgol Glan Ceubal
Wardell Armstrong was appointed by Cardiff Council to provide multi-disciplinary support to a planning application for the consolidation of Gabalfa English Medium and Ysgol Glan Ceubal Welsh Medium Primary Schools into one purpose-built new building.
The provision of landscape architect, ecology, soils and acoustic technical inputs allowed for a draft scheme design to be agreed by the client. The scheme required Pre-Application Consultation with neighbour and specialist consultees, which became a mandatory requirement in Wales on major projects from August 2016. Wardell Armstrong was also appointed to provide planning consultancy advice to coordinate and manage the pre-application consultation process and produce a summary report of the findings to accompany the planning application, thereafter submitted in December 2016.
The application was unanimously approved at planning committee in February 2017 without any objections. Thereafter, Wardell Armstrong was retained to provide technical input and to coordinate the discharge of pre-commencement planning conditions.
The £8.2 million project is jointly funded by Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government through the 21st Century Schools programme, with the new school building opened to pupils and staff in September 2018.
