Planning Permission Granted for the Lamby Way Solar Farm in Cardiff

Wardell Armstrong are delighted to have secured planning permission for a major renewable energy development in Cardiff.

The solar farm is centred on 42 acres of a former landfill site in Cardiff Council ownership, found to the east of the city. It will generate an estimated 8.99MW of renewable energy, to be fed into the National Grid with also an agreement in principle for a private wire arrangement to supply Dwr Cymru Welsh Water operational assets.

Working with development team colleagues providing ecology and design inputs, Wardell Armstrong’s planners, landscape practitioners and drainage engineers were able to remove all consultee concerns at the time of the application being presented to planning committee. This allowed councillors to vote in favour of approving the scheme subject to conditions on the 15th May.

Cllr Michael Michael, Cardiff Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Recycling and Environment said “The Lamby Way Solar farm project addresses a series of Council targets and ambitions in generating secure, clean, renewable energy at a site that would be otherwise difficult to develop. The project has been a longstanding ambition for the Council and we are very pleased to have secured a planning consent for the solar farm whilst also protecting the valuable ecological assets on this challenging site. The project is a clear demonstration of how we can continue to play a part in reducing carbon emissions and increasing the production of renewable energy in Wales in line with Welsh Government’s requirements”.

Simon Williams, Technical Director for Planning at Wardell Armstrong, said “We are delighted to be able to be involved in a project that delivers a significant renewable energy provision for the capital city of Wales. It is clear statement that Cardiff Council are serious in their intent to lead the way for local authorities in Wales in respect of greener energy provision”.

Preparatory work is due to start immediately, with the main construction contract commencing in the summer months to enable a target completion of November 2019.
