Our Client ‘Extra’ Opens ‘Next Generation’ Service Station Near Leeds

The Skelton Lakes Motorway Service Area was opened earlier this year!

Working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team, Wardell Armstrong provided advice on ground conditions, contaminated land, earthworks and ecological services for this project.

The undulating ‘Living Green Roof’, which ties the building into the natural landscape, provides high environmental standards on sustainability. The building also incorporates a wildlife visitor centre, which will be operated by the RSPB.

Government Policy on Motorway safety states that Motorway Service Areas should be less than 30 minutes’ drive time or no more than 28 miles apart on the Motorway Network. The 24-hour Service Area, situated on junction 45 of the M1 and links to the A63 near Leeds, has now significantly improved public road safety within this section of the Motorway Network.

Whilst on a visit to the now opened service area, we saw the roof being hand mowed – not something that you see everyday!
