Multidisciplinary Services for One of the UK’s Most Efficient Energy from Waste Facilities
Wardell Armstrong are pleased to have assisted Cory Group on the innovative Riverside 2 scheme! Cory Group has commissioned the construction and operation of the integrated Riverside 2 Energy from Waste facility. It will be built upon land adjacent to the existing Riverside Resource Recovery Facility (Riverside 1) in Belvedere, London.
Riverside 2 will also be one of the largest and most efficient Energy from Waste facilities in the UK, capable of processing up to 650,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste and generating enough electricity to power c.140,000 homes each year. The facility will help address the critical need for additional waste processing infrastructure within London, the Southeast and East of England. It will also help to meet London’s intensive waste management and energy generation infrastructure demands and will be complemented by Cory’s plans for an ambitious decarbonisation project which has the potential to cut 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
Wardell Armstrong was commissioned to provide consultancy services to Cory Group, largely in the capacity of technical advice, ground investigation, environmental permitting, and dewatering abstraction licensing. An Archaeological and Heritage review was also carried out, with the contract culminating in Wardell Armstrong providing an overall ground investigation consultancy support role.
Wardell Armstrong’s expert multidisciplinary team led by Technical Director, Sam Folarin, carried out a high-level review of all available site information collated for Riverside to provide a commentary on the risks associated with the ground conditions present. This involved a desk-based geotechnical and environmental review, geophysical survey, intrusive ground investigation, waste classification. This scope of work was also supplemented by Wardell Armstrong’s review of the following aspects associated with the site: soil mechanics, asbestos management, remediation strategy, geotechnical design, earthworks and UXO risk assessments.
Cory Group required an abstraction licence for dewatering during the construction of a proposed Waste Bunker and Ash Bunker/Attenuation Tank at the Site. Wardell Armstrong’s Water Team is undertaking the strategic management and technical assurance of the permit/licence application work, and liaison with the Environment Agency.
Wardell Armstrong is currently scheduled to provide an onsite supervisory role regarding the facilitating works and earthworks taking place prior to construction phase. This will be undertaken whilst continuing to work closely with Cory Group and the relevant stakeholders to clearly communicate constraints, provide technical and practical advice on how to tackle them.
