A New Approach to Managing Recyclables

Wardell Armstrong have been working in collaboration with Coventry City Council and its Partner Councils to develop a 175,000 tonne per annum Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) to process household and commercial dry recycling collected by the Councils. This high specification facility is designed to provide the opportunity for the region to increase recycling rates, enhance the quality of dry recycling outputs, deliver financial savings and increase landfill diversion.

Materials Recycling FacilityWe’ve been involved in this innovative project from its commencement in 2017 at the feasibility and business case stage through to delivering the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), planning application and ongoing multidisciplinary technical advisor role through procurement, design and as Owners Engineer and Site Supervisor during the construction phase. Our services included, arboriculture, noiseair quality, archaeology and heritage, climate change and renewable energy, ecology, transport planning, hydrogeology and hydrology, landscape architecture, civil and structural engineering, surveying and mapping and ground engineering.

What started out as an extremely overgrown plot of ex-allotment land, that was heavily littered with fly-tipped waste, following several years of work and numerous site surveys and contractor engagement, has now been transformed into a state of the art, high specification MRF to process the Councils’ recyclate into high quality and marketable outputs.

Members of our waste and planning teams, recently headed to site to see the now fully functioning plant in action. Regional Director, Ali Kemp said: “It was fantastic to see what all the hard work had contributed to. It is not often that teams get the opportunity to see the facilities once operational, so it was a great learning experience. Thank you very much to the Sherbourne Recycling team for hosting us, and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership to deliver innovative waste management solutions.”

We are proud to have been involved in this high-profile project which will enable the Council to better manage its recyclate and benefit from the wider environmental advantages of the scheme. It is also inspiring other Councils to explore a similar path.
