Health and Safety Services Provided for New £32m Car Park at Royal Stoke

Staff members at Royal Stoke University Hospital can now benefit from a new £32 million multi-storey car park that opened for use last week. The new staff car park has replaced existing spaces at the Royal Infirmary and Central Outpatients Departments sites.

Our Health and Safety team were first commissioned by the University Hospitals of the North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust in 2020 to act as the Principal Designer and Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Advisor for the c.£5m site clearance and subsequent demolition of the former Stoke Royal Infirmary. The site covered an area of 8.84Ha and comprised of 52 infirmary related buildings. Once cleared the site provided temporary carparking facilities for staff during the construction of the multi-story carpark. This leaves the way for the former Royal Infirmary to be developed for local housing and community services.

The construction of the multi-storey carpark commenced in July 2022, and our Health and Safety team were commissioned again as the CDM Advisor and Health and Safety Consultant to the Trust during the construction works.

For both projects, we provided Client support and guidance on all health and safety matters concerning the demolition and construction works and the completion of fortnightly CDM Compliance Audits on the Principal Contractor. This was to ensure that their activities were and continued to be compliant with the requirements of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 and the health and safety management systems as detailed in their Construction Phase Plan, totally c.104 audits across both projects.

The five-story carpark has over 1,600 spaces and was officially opened by UHNM Chief Executive Tracy Bullock at a ribbon cutting ceremony at the end of April.
