Strategic mine closure programme - Romania

The restructuring of the Romanian mining sector by its national government called for the closure of hundreds of mines of all types. In a project funded by the World Bank and the UK Government’s Department for International Development, we supported the process by revising the Romanian mine closure and environmental rehabilitation procedures to bring them in line with the good international industry practice of the time.

The project included designing closure works, preparing contract documentation, assisting the letting of contracts, obtaining regulatory approvals, carrying out technical and environmental audits, advising on additional work, stakeholder consultations, providing assistance in preparing a mine closure manual and monitoring closure works at 45 open pit and underground metalliferous and coal mines.

The many Wardell Armstrong specialists who worked in Romania on this project included geotechnical engineers to advise on waste dumps and ground stability, ventilation experts, hydrogeological experts and contract specialists. The mine remediation programme has transformed not just the local environments but the lives of the people who live there.
