St. Georges- FA Training Facilities

A national football centre and inspirational sports training destination to rival any other in the world. That was the burning ambition of the FA when they bought Byrkley Park – 143ha of parkland near Burton on Trent. But there were major landscaping and ecological challenges to be met. Could a £120 million development really be integrated into a sensitive historical landscape, sustaining its heritage and wildlife habitats?

We were selected by the FA to look after landscape strategy, management and design as part of a multidisciplinary team, working closely with Bowmer and Kirkland and the lead architects Redbox Design Group.

Our task included the external works design, with detailed planting and the hard landscape design of hotel and sports buildings. We designed the circulation with access paths, steps and ramps. We planned the restoration of the parkland, the protection of veteran trees and the enhancement of wood pasture. We created a new lake and wetland with a shingle beach to enhance biodiversity. We carried out extensive earth modelling to retain all the excavated material on site. St George’s Park is now open – and fulfilling its promise as a world class sporting, training, coaching and conferencing facility within a quintessential English parkland setting.
