Scottish Power - offshore wind resource assessment

When Scottish Power were looking to identify potential sites for offshore wind farms in the most cost-effective way, they asked us to assess and provide the mean offshore wind speeds for various regions around the UK for the last twenty years.
 
We used a new approach to offshore wind pre-feasibility resource assessment that greatly reduces costs. A data set of conditioned satellite offshore wind measurements for multiple sites, aggregated into a six hourly average with a 0.25° resolution, it allows site-specific resource assessment and twenty year variability analysis for wind speed and direction to be carried out accurately and rapidly for multiple sites globally.
 
Our initial resource identification study for Scottish Power looked at five offshore regions around the UK. We produced a mean wind speed of the last twenty years, assigned it to the relevant 0.25° grid squares, and then supplied it through a graphical overlay into a GIS form as well as a precise, tabulated data set.
