Essentially PLAXIS is a finite element
program for numerical modelling of geotechnical situations. The reason for using
finite element analysis is that it enables complex soil behaviour to be modelled
in a more realistic manner.
Finite element analysis can deal with a range of
complex situations that are difficult to model using traditional techniques (or
for which no reliable alternative methods are available), including for example:
Variations in soil properties
through the ground model - in particular variations in stiffness
Progressive failure mechanisms
Complex failure modes
Interaction between the soil
and structural elements
‘Load shedding’ and stress
redistribution
Transient pore pressure
changes
Partial mobilisation of
shearing resistance or load-bearing capacity
