Over Hulton waste transfer station and household waste recycling centre

Viridor is one of the UK's leading waste management operators. When they were awarded the Greater Manchester residual waste treatment PFI contract in April 2009, they realised they needed expert permitting support to develop and produce the environmental permit application for a new waste transfer station and household waste recycling centre.

As part of the application, we supported Viridor in negotiations with the Environment Agency to make sure that the design was optimised, and that the odour management plan met the required standards in an area with sensitive receptors adjacent to the site – including local residents living immediately adjacent to the site.  We prepared the odour management plan through to its agreement with the Environment Agency, making sure that the generation of odours will be minimised through the effective management of the facility.

The permit was issued in November 2013. Now constructed and fully operational, the facility has been permitted to accept a total of 85,000 tonnes per year, split between 70,000 tonnes for the transfer loading station and 15,000 for the household waste recycling centre.
