4th World Day Against Child Labour 12 June 2005

This year, local and national organisations and many children’s groups are expected to join with the International Labour Office constituents around the world observing the day. The main emphasis is the need to remove child workers from small-scale mines and quarries.

Kevin D’Souza Principal Mining Engineer at Wardell Armstrong has been advising DFID – ILO on pilot projects in Ghana, Tanzania, Democratic Republic Congo, Nigeria and other parts of the world. The pilot projects help demonstrate that it is feasible to eliminate child labour in dangerous conditions by helping the mining and quarrying communities acquire legal rights. Help was also given in organising co-operatives and improving health and safety for adult workers. This in turns helps increase productivity and secures essential services such as schools, clean water and sanitation often in very remote areas.

The first International Labour Office World Day was launched in June 2002 to raise the visibility of the problem and highlighting the global movement to eliminate child labour in its worst forms.
