Wardell Armstrong has had a long association with the University of Leeds Mining & Mineral Engineering department and each year a student prize is awarded. This is given to a final year student who has made the most progress throughout the course and contributed to the activities of the Department. It is given on the recommendation of the professor of Mining Engineering.

This year’s winner is Mr Trevor James (Jim) Clark who graduated with a 1st Class Honours degree in Mining Engineering. Dr C Poole, Head of Programmes at the University said "throughout his time as an undergraduate he has been an active and highly motivated member of the Department. He is a worthy recipient of the Wardell Armstrong Prize."

Following the award presentation Jim was flying to Australia to take up a bursary from The Institute of Mining, Minerals and Materials.
