Potteries Pyramid

Potteries Pyramid – A New Beginning for Chatterley Valley, Stoke-on-Trent

A new landmark now greets visitors approaching Tunstall along the A500 Gateway into Stoke-on-Trent, in the form of a stainless steel pyramid obelisk.

Wardell  Armstrong LLP has had a long involvement with the Chatterley Valley regeneration project. The overall project covers an area of some 132 hectares, to the east of the A500 link road, between Junctions 15 and 16 of the M6. The first phase of redevelopment will take place on the 16 hectare Lowlands Road site, with a 650,000sqft development, providing 1,000 new jobs. With the heavy industry all but gone, and following years of dereliction, the Chatterley Valley area is earmarked for an exciting transformation over the coming years, with employment being the key to this rejuvenation of the area. The firm is retained by Advantage West Midlands to provide geo-environmental and ecological advice on the re-use of former industrial sites. Recently this has included the completion of the £1.3million earthworks scheme at Lowlands Road and the provision of site appraisals and development costs for 36 hectares of industrial land along the route of the proposed Tunstall south western link road.

The sculpture, designed by Ondre Nowakowski, the winner of a City organised competition to deliver new artwork to the City’s gateways, stands 10m tall and features the outline of a traditional bottle oven, sculpted into its steel profile. The sculpture recognises the City’s heritage in mining, steel making and, of course, the pottery industry.

The Potteries Pyramid marks the start of an exciting transformation for the Chatterley Valley. Wardell Armstrong was commissioned to provide foundation design for the sculpture and to project manage its erection.
