Harry Hill cycleway, Pilsworth Road

The 1100m long Harry Hill cycleway, which runs the full length of Pilsworth Road, Bury, has been officially opened by Harry Hill himself.

Named by Bury MBC after Mr Hill, who was a medal winner in cycling at the 1936 Munich Olympics, the cycleway has been constructed by Viridor Waste Management as a condition of the granting of planning permission for the Pilsworth South Quarry and Landfill. Mr Hill has been a life-long promoter of the cyclist’s cause and, at the ripe old age of 96, still retains an interest in cycling.

Design and construction of the £200,000.00 contract was managed by engineers at the Leigh Office and built by Wrenco (Contractors) of Liverpool.

The photograph shows Jim Nurse, Technical Director at the Leigh Office, alongside Steve Newman of Viridor Waste Management Ltd, two councillors from Bury MBC and Mr Hill at the opening ceremony held on Thursday 22nd June 2006.
