Reducing Explosion Risk
in Coal Mines in China |
Wardell Armstrong LLP is responsible for managing an UK-China technology
transfer project on underground gas drainage drilling sponsored by the DTI.
This project has the potential to create substantial opportunities for
UK suppliers of mine-safety technologies, equipment and
services as well as to address the serious gas-hazards blighting
China’s coal mines.
An underground test site has been selected where a trial will be held to aid the
design, and assess the performance, of a
UK drilling system.
Participants in the project include Edeco, Trolex, Alkane Energy, China Coal
Research Institute (Xi’an Branch), Huaibei Coal Mining Group and the China Coal
Information Institute.
The health and safety of UK
team members who will operate in the underground environment is of paramount
importance. A team of UK
experts, lead by Jeff Smith CEO Wardell Armstrong LLP and Chief Mining Engineer
discussed the necessary precautions and other practical issues during a visit to
the mine at the end of April 2005.
