Approval of the Beauly Denny 400kv Power line Upgrade

Article added 22nd January 2010

On Wednesday 6th January 2010 the Scottish Ministers announced approval to a controversial power line through the Highlands as a crucial boost for connection of onshore and offshore renewable energy generation capacity to the Grid. Scottish and Southern Energy, the power group, will upgrade the existing 137-mile electricity transmission line from Beauly, near Inverness, to Denny, near Falkirk, in the central belt. The upgraded line will require 600 pylons, at least 200 fewer than now.

However, the largest will be 65 meters high – 24 meters taller than the existing biggest structure Wardell Armstrong’s Newcastle office team led by Gill Beauchamp has been working on this project for about 4 years and carried out the landscape and visual assessment, assisted in managing the EIA and Gill gave evidence at the public Inquiry which took nearly a year to reach a conclusion.

Jim Mather, Scotland energy minister, told Holyrood on Wednesday that the upgrade would be the most significant grid infrastructure project in a generation. The construction costs will be approximately £320million. He said:

“Scotland’s electricity network needs significant reinforcement to allow our vast renewables potential to be harnessed, transmitted and exported – currently we simply do not have the transmission capacity to carry the green energy which Scotland will generate over the coming years.”

This must demonstrate to our clients that Wardell Armstrong is leading the field in expertise in this area of environmental consultancy for the Utilities Sector. The team deserves a big thank you and congratulations for this notable success.
