Methane Resource Assessment – UK Coal

Wardell Armstrong International (WAI) was instructed by UK Coal Plc (UK Coal), to carry out an assessment of the existing potential of coal methane resources at sites belonging to UK Coal.

The report took the form of a review of coal methane capture undertaken at four operational coal methane capture sites belonging to UK Coal together with estimates of the future potential for coal methane release, capture and utilisation.

We reviewed methodologies used to estimate the size of a methane reservoir within a given volume of ground within a larger mining district.  In respect of abandoned mine methane, we reviewed typical gas production rate declines, fitting theoretical models with available measured data and using these to provide long-term expected gas capture (and gas revenue) predictions.
