Mauritanian Copper Mines - First Quantum Minerals

The Guelb Moghrein copper/gold mine in Akjoujt, Mauritania, is operated by Mauritanian Copper Mines. They commissioned us to audit every aspect of their carbon in leach process from the transportation and storage of sodium cyanide to the disposal of tailings to make sure their processes were fully compliant with the International Cyanide Management Institute code (often referred to as the "cyanide code").

Our first operational audit took the form of a gap analysis before carrying out a full formal audit the following year. Our investigations and reporting followed the nine principles of the code: procurement, transportation, handling and storage, operations, decommissioning, worker safety, emergency response, training and dialogue.

The recommendations we gave in the initial gap analysis resulted in significant improvements in the management of cyanide by the time of the second year formal audit. The audits also formed the basis of the operating procedures for their use of sodium cyanide on site.
