Johnson’s Wharf, Hanley - Gladedale Homes

Building houses on brownfield land can throw up many challenges. When Gladedale Homes were developing at Johnson’s Wharf in Hanley, Stoke on Trent, for a residential development they approached us to undertake a number of design services including civil, structural and ground engineering assessments and designs.

The site is underlain by three worked coal seams and a natural fault. It was formerly occupied by a ceramics factory and had previously been remediated for development utilising a 2m thick crust of crushed and re-compacted site won material.

We provided professional services for the mine treatment works, including reworking of the previous remediation, house foundation designs (mainly flat rafts) and external roads and drainage design – as well as advice on the refurbishment of an historic building to be retained on the site on the site for conversion into flats.
