Isle of Portland - Scottish & Southern Energy

A proposed 33kV cable route along Chesil Beach in Dorset and the causeway linking the Isle of Portland to the mainland was due to cross a number of sensitive special protection areas, special areas of conservation, sites of special scientific interest, a RAMSAR site and the Dorset and East Devon coastline World Heritage site. We were commissioned by Scottish and Southern Energy to carry out an environmental appraisal of two potential route options.

Having assessed the potential impacts on ecology and archaeology through an ecological desk study, an extended phase 1 habitat survey,  a visual appraisal, a World Heritage Site assessment and a cultural heritage and archaeological desk survey and site inspection, we used the results to determine the least environmentally damaging option. Detailed vegetation mapping using GPS followed, as well as an archaeological watching brief.
Ecological impact was further reduced by design changes to the route, which has now been extended to link to Chickwell substation
