The Crown Estate

The Crown Estate

The Crown Estate is a diverse property business with a capital value of £8.6 billion, and a total property value of £8.1 billion. Part of that diverse portfolio includes mineral assets and The Crown Estate wants to see those assets developed in a responsible way while obtaining best commercial value.

We advise The Crown Estate on its onshore mineral assets and we're currently responsible for managing over 20 mineral leases including both hard rock and sand and gravel aggregate quarries, dimension stone quarries, brick clay and surface coal mining operations. We also represent and advise The Crown Estate in the negotiation of new mineral leases and related agreements.

The Crown Estate also has the prerogative right to gold and silver in the UK and as part of our role we advise on options and leases for mining of these precious metals.  We’ve also worked with the client to improve lease terms and worked on the diversification of uses to include renewable energy schemes utilising landfill gas and photovoltaics.

Other projects include the management of a treatment programme to deal with abandoned old mines, many of which were worked in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This activity includes working with statutory bodies in respect of health and safety, ecology and archaeology.
