Designed by world renowned artist Charles Jencks, Northumberlandia is the largest human landform sculpture in the world. His stunning creation of a reclining woman was created from 1.5 million tonnes of soil and clay from Shotton surface mine. Almost 400m long and 35m high, the figure forms the centrepiece of a 19ha community park with three lakes and a four mile network of footpaths. Funded by the Banks Group and the Blagdon Estate, the park is open to visitors who can walk over the landform – with spectacular distant views over the Northumberland countryside to the Scottish Border.

We made sure that the steep slopes would remain stable and that surface and ground water drainage would protect the structure and footpaths from deterioration. The modelling was carried out using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
