Topographic survey for solar farm

Lightsource Renewable Energy - one of the UK's largest utility-scale photovoltaic farm providers - had identified a potential site at Hendai Farm, Gelligaer in South Wales. In order to inform the design team they needed a detailed topographical survey of the existing ground, including locating the position of all the trees on the site and the extent of their canopies.

As well as preparing the planning application for the proposed solar development, we carried out a detailed topographical survey of the 57 hectare site using a combination of GPS and conventional total station surveying equipment. We orientated the survey to Ordnance Survey National Grid, converted it to a 3D model for use by the design team, and also used it as a base map for archaeological investigations, phase one habitat ecological surveys and landscape and visual impact assessment.

The planning application for a 13MW solar photovoltaic grid-tied electricity generating installation was submitted to Caerphilly County Council.
