Energybuild - Aberpergwm Colliery

Operated by Energybuild and owned by Walter Energy, Aberpergwm Colliery mines high quality anthracite coal from seams between the Neath and Dulais valleys in South Wales. Its planning history is complex, with many individual permissions covering surface and underground activities - but all were time-limited and due to expire on the same day.

To continue mining the potentially tens of millions of tonnes of underground reserves and create a new single surface mine waste repository, a new composite planning application was needed. We were commissioned to prepare the planning application and co-ordinate environmental consultants to produce the EIA and environmental statement.

As Energybuild also operate several opencast coal mines on the hillside above Aberpergwm, we were also commissioned to help them supervise the operations effectively to comply with planning conditions. Excessive bulking of the overburden was a particular problem, so we carried out regular surveys to monitor bulkage factors and subsequently produced revised restoration schemes. Our involvement proved crucial in securing planning permission for these sites and helping with their design and management to make sure of optimum returns on investment.
