Marshalls Mono - extension to dimension stone quarry

Just north of Pontardawe in South Wales, Gwrhyd Specialist Stone Quarry is operated by Marshalls. Originally part of a hill farm and under private ownership, it's gained in popularity thanks to the unique geological characteristics of its building and dimension stone.

We were initially commissioned to help Marshalls acquire the quarry. This involved due diligence of the planning history, and a review of the title documentation. After a successful acquisition, we were then instructed to prepare a planning application for a lateral extension to the quarry which would also regularise the existing operations. As part of the planning application process, we produced a detailed design for the extension and a revised reserve assessment which would extend the life of the quarry for a further fifteen years.

The quarry extension design formed the basis for a detailed environmental impact assessment and environmental statement - helping to secure planning permission and consent for the extension and restoration of the quarry.
