Gas pipeline stability assessment and diversion - Shawell Quarry

We were appointed by National Grid to prepare a pipeline stability assessment for an existing gas pipeline running through Shawell Quarry in leistershire This included designing the standoff and protection works needed for the pipeline to stay in place, and calculating the volume of saleable sand and gravel that would be sterilised.

The amount of mineral sterilised together with the consequential landfill losses lead to parties considering diversion as the least cost solution. We were instructed to undertake pipeline route corridor assessments including ecological and archaeological studies, and an alternative route was identified for the partial diversion.

Prior to the diversion the mineral was pre-extracted and an engineered bund constructed to enable the pipeline to be diverted. Wardell Armstrong designed supervised and certified the bund construction and the pipeline was successfully diverted.
