Anaerobic Digestion Plant - Cambridgeshire

Anaerobic Digestion Plant - Cambridgeshire

This pioneering project involves the development of an anaerobic digestion plant for processing mixed food waste on behalf of Local Generation at Westry near March in Cambridgeshire. The site is next to a potato packing plant and receives food waste from the facility and other outlets.

Planning permission was granted for the development of a 30,000 tonne plant in 2009. An extension to increase the capacity to 70,000 tonnes was granted in 2011. Electricity is exported to the National Grid, and heat will be used in the packing plant and to support future low carbon development.

Wardell Armstrong prepared a planning application for the plant and an environmental permit. The planning application was supported by an Environmental Appraisal. This assessed impacts and provided mitigation in respect of: noise, air quality and odour, contamination, landscape and visual impact, ecology, archaeology, hydrology, drainage and flood risk assessment.
