West Midlands Fire Station

West Midlands Fire Station

We were appointed to act as heritage consultants for the proposed development of the former West Midlands Fire Station, a Grade II listed building within the Steelhouse Lane Conservation Area of Birmingham.  The proposals involved the full restoration of the Fire Station building with conversion of the former family quarters into student accommodation.  The scheme also proposed a tower structure of 23 storeys within the curtilage of the Fire Station.

We undertook extensive heritage analysis of the building and its setting, complemented by photomontages.  The assessment included a tall buildings assessment, a Conservation Area character appraisal and townscape assessment, extensive view analysis and an appraisal of the structural integrity of the structure and its ability to accommodate change. We represented the client at numerous stakeholder meetings and presented at CABE and the Birmingham Civic Trust.
