Cemetery Park, Adamsdown, Cardiff

Now a £1/2 million park, Cardiff Council commissioned us to transform this strategically located former cemetery into a park at the hub of Cardiff city centre’s Adamsdown West Renewal Area program of housing and public realm upgrade.

The terms of the Home Office licence required to undertake cemetery works required all uncovered remains from the 900 bodies buried to be logged and re-interring off site, and every piece of cemetery related masonry, whether complete, damaged or broken, be incorporated, along with a memorial garden, into the design.

Stakeholder engagement activities resulted in providing a Multi Use Games Area and holding a design competition amongst local school children to produce a park logo, subsequently reproduced in limestone and slate paving in the memorial garden.

In addition we investigated the Council’s slightly unusual request that prisoners be used to construct the works.  We undertook Landscape Consultants workstages C – L including CDM Co-ordination and QS services and completed the design commission and implementation works in 9 months.
