E.ON - technical due diligence

When E.ON were considering the development of a tidal array off the coast of Wales, they asked us to provide a technical due diligence report assessing the viability both of the turbine design and the deployment of the array.

Our assessment of the proposed site infrastructure included site access, port capabilities, grid connection options, vessels, anchoring and supply chain. We looked at environmental impact considerations including mammal (cetaceans and pinnipeds) interaction, energy extraction and cabling implications. We carried out a full project lifecycle assessment including installation, O&M, decommissioning, health and safety, economic viability and practicality risks. Our financial analysis covered CAPEX, OPEX, installation, commissioning and O&M costs and project benefits. The resource assessment of the project area included identifying suitable sites, array and single device performance modelling, energy capture and expected energy output. Our technical assessment of the turbine design took in survivability, maintainability, reliability and availability, including analysis of structural, mechanical, electrical and control and instrumentation components and FMECA.

As well as identifying the best practical options for areas such as cabling and grid connection, we were able to highlight critical device design weaknesses, project development and operational issues, with recommendations for improvements and remedial action.
