Newcastle Science City Community Engagement Project

Newcastle Science City Community Engagement Project

The Newcastle upon Tyne Science City initiative aims to maximise the city's scientific potential and raise awareness of expertise across the world. It included an ERDF-funded community engagement project with disadvantaged people, involving them with science and showing how it could make a real and lasting difference to their communities.

We produced information graphics to inform stakeholders on the success of funding initiatives and celebrate the project outcomes at exhibitions and events. We collated a database of the partner organisations and thousands of participants, managing output through GIS. We analysed the demographic profile and employment success of participants, rapidly generating maps to emphasise the success of project targets - ranging from location of baseline data to in-depth analysis and appraisal of key socio-demographic and economic criteria.

Our results were used to justify the success of ERDF funding, and are now being used to promote the north east as a hub for scientific opportunities. We were able to clearly demonstrate the success of the community engagement initiative, showing the diversity of the people involved and how communities had driven research and forged links with the academic centres of the city.
