Inata Gold Mine - Burkina Faso

The Inata Gold Mine is in the northern part of Burkina Faso, where logistics are a significant challenge. We were commissioned by Societe des Mines de Belahouro to produce the engineering design for tailings storage at a 2.25Mtpa gold open pit operation, and to provide CQA services during the construction of the first stage embankment.

Using proven methodologies, our design approach made best use of local resources, plant and labour skills. A double circular storage facility (40ha each) was designed to store gold tailings. The cells are bounded by embankments raised in downstream stages. The tailings delivery allows the controlled deposition of tailings from multiple spigots to form a uniform beach. The design provides sufficient storage for eight years (the life of mine) tailings production. Mine waste materials will be used for embankment raises, with local borrow pits established for the initial embankment construction.

We carried out site investigations and laboratory testwork to evaluate ground conditions and establish the engineering and chemical properties of the borrow pit materials. Monitoring installations were constructed for the operation of the facility. The first storage cell was successfully completed in readiness for the start of operations.
