Guelb Moghrein - Mauritania Copper Mines

When the Guelb Moghrien Cu-Au mine re-opened after being closed for several years, new tailings storage facilities were needed as part of an expansion programme. We were commissioned to prepare separate engineering designs for the storage of copper and gold tailings, and to provide CQA support during construction of the storage cells. As the project is located in a remote area with an arid climate, our main aims were to provide safe storage, simple construction methods, and water recycling from the copper storage facility.

The gold tailings were stored in a series of rectangular cells, lined with geo-membrane and incorporating leak detection systems. The copper tailings were stored in single large sub-aerial storage cell, incorporating a central decant for recycling water to the process plant.

We provided CQA services for the construction of the storage facilities, including independent checking of geo-membrane installations. The engineering designs were developed in collaboration with mine personnel. The quality of construction was checked and monitored routinely by testing, with defects continuously corrected and validated.
