Greater Manchester waste PFI contract

Greater Manchester waste PFI contract

When they were bidding for the Greater Manchester waste PFI contract, Viridor Laing had to assess the suitability of a huge number of potential sites for the location of new waste management facilities. They also had to thoroughly assess the potential liabilities of sites already being used by the local authorities. Fundamentally important to the development of a robust bid, the work called for significant resource and deep technical expertise against an extremely challenging bid programme.

We were engaged to carry out environmental due diligence on over 100 potential and operational sites. We also undertook planning and environmental impact appraisals on more than 20 proposed new development sites to identify any potentially sensitive planning issues and establish the risk of planning failure.  Finally, we prepared site layouts and masterplans for 36 waste facilities that formed the basis of the final proposal to make sure they were operable.

Aided by our technical team, Viridor were able to demonstrate that their proposed contract solution was deliverable and robust. They went on to submit the winning bid for this waste contract, the largest and most complex of its type in Western Europe.
