Gold mine - Ethiopia

We were commissioned to provide hydrogeological input to a definitive feasibility study for an open pit mine design.

We reviewed previous pre-feasibility hydrogeological work and identified key areas needing clarification within the hydrogeological conceptual site model, and transferred them into a scope of works for an intrusive investigation. Our hydrogeologists oversaw the drilling and installation of most of the investigation wells, and trained the client's geologists to undertake the in-situ hydrogeological testing.

Geophysical works required were unfamiliar to the client, so we drafted RFT documents on their behalf and reviewed the bids to help them make an informed choice. As the client also had limited experience of undertaking a series of aquifer tests we designed to determine hydraulic aquifer parameters, we provided a technical test specification as well as a bill of quantities for the equipment required.

We're current finalising the revised hydrogeological conceptual site model and producing analytical solutions to define the likely inflows into the pit groundwater, surface water and rainwater runoff. The results will feed into the water balance for the site and the geotechnical design of the pit.
