Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre

Viridor is one of the UK's leading waste management operators, and the largest in Scotland. When they were awarded the Glasgow residual waste treatment PPP contract, they realised they needed expert permitting support to develop and produce the PPC permit application for the Glasgow recycling and renewable energy centre. An integrated waste management facility including materials recovery, anaerobic digestion and advanced thermal treatment, it will treat up to 200,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year using gasification technology from late 2015.

As part of the application, we supported Viridor in negotiations with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and with technology providers – aiming to make sure that the design was optimised with emissions to air accurately modelled and shown to be acceptable. We also prepared the application and supporting documentation, including a ‘best available techniques’ justification, and qualitative and quantitative risk assessments.

In addition we gave feedback to Viridor and the technology providers on a range of issues including the results of noise and emissions modelling. This positively influenced the design and performance of the facility, with confirmation that it would cause no significant environmental and health impacts at any potentially sensitive receptors.
