Acoustics

Wardell Armstrong undertakes noise assessment work to support planning applications where new developments are proposed near to existing noise sources, or new noise sources are proposed near to existing sensitive receptors. Developments may include new roads or other transport related infrastructure, residential, commercial or industrial schemes, and landfill or mineral extraction sites.

SoundPLAN and Noise Map computer software is used to assess noise from traffic, industrial and open site operations, and the software graphics module is used to design and demonstrate possible mitigation schemes. It is common practice for the modelling outputs to inform the layout of a proposed development, to maximise land use.

We are familiar with Calculation of Road Traffic Noise prediction methodology and with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and WebTAG Transport Analysis Guidance approaches to traffic noise assessment. Rail noise is assessed using CoRN methodology. Similarly we are able to assess and advise on noise from construction activities and from wind turbines and wind farms.

Noise surveys are routinely undertaken as part of a noise study, and the results assessed in accordance with national guidance such as British Standards, Planning Policy Guidance Notes, National Planning Policy Guidelines and World Health Organisation guidelines, or with local guidance as appropriate. Advice can be given on detailed mitigation schemes to achieve outdoor and indoor noise limits.

Similarly, vibration measurements and assessments are carried out where a sensitive development is proposed next to a source of vibration, such as road or rail traffic, or blasting in minerals sites, or heavy engineering work.

Wardell Armstrong is familiar with the Building Regulations ADE 2004 sound insulation testing procedure, and can provide advice on remedial measures where sound insulation is shown to be unsatisfactory.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations, and similar legislation for vibration, require certain standards to be achieved in the workplace. We are able to monitor existing levels and to suggest appropriate actions to comply with the exposure action levels.

Our assessments are regularly used to inform the masterplanning process, to prepare environmental statements, for IPPC applications, to assess possible nuisance and to prepare expert evidence on noise and vibration matters to support planning appeals and in relation to personal injury claims.

Wardell Armstrong is a Member of the Association of Noise Consultants.
