East Sakaro Midroc Gold Mining - Ethiopia

Midroc Gold Mine PLC planned to expand their gold mining operation into the East Sakaro area of Southern Ethiopia. – an underground development that would extend the existing large scale Legadembi open pit mining operation. We were commissioned to carry out an ESIA for the proposed extension in line with Ethiopian regulatory requirements for project permitting and environmental standards, and with international good practice for mining projects - in particular IFC and World Bank.

As the project wasn’t a greenfield operation, our focus was on the potential additional and cumulative impacts on the environment. After carrying out a pre-feasibility study and scoping visit, we identified the requirements for the ESIA and particularly the environmental and social baseline studies.

Our team of environmental and social specialists provided services covering project management, specific hydrogeological and hydrological studies, social assessment and guidance on stakeholder engagement, remote sensing and GIS, together with impact assessment and compilation of the ESIA. This process was undertaken in parallel with the mine feasibility study, and the ESIA team worked closely with the mine design team. The final ESIA was subsequently used by the Ethiopian government as an example of ESIA best practice.
