Disposing of salt – a successful marketing campaign

Disposing of salt – a successful marketing campaign

During the last century, a large area of the mineral rights to salt in Cheshire was acquired by the salt-producing companies operating in the county. Most of the ownership eventually ended up in the hands of four companies. When one of these wanted to dispose of its salt, we were asked to provide valuation and marketing advice. The estate was large, covering several thousand acres in one contiguous block and with many smaller parcels spread over many square miles.

Initially we undertook a desk study covering geology, town and country planning, the nature of the market for this type of property and its potential value. We also identified potential purchasers, and prepared the detailed information memorandum needed to market such a large portfolio.

Our successful marketing campaign resulted in a buyer coming forward. We advised the vendor to sell their entire interest in a single transaction, not just the most attractive parts – avoiding any residual ownership and the administrative problems that would arise if they continued to own small isolated areas of minerals in perpetuity.
