CMM/CMB – Shanxi Province, People’s Republic of China

With a view to promoting and introducing new modern in-seam methane drainage and underground gas gathering technology, we were appointed by the Asian Development Bank to review and evaluate the existing and planned coal production and coal mine methane drainage activities at the Sihe mine, run by the Jincheng Anthracite Coal Mining Group, Shanxi Province, People's Republic of China. The project also involved the drilling of more than 100 CBM boreholes from the ground surface to intercept a very gassy seam of coal in order to reduce methane contents in advance of mining.

We provided training to improve the practice of methane collection, along with gas quantity prediction methodologies, and training on health and safety issues including risk assessment. We also monitored CBM drilling and surface gas capture technologies, helped the mine to select CMM utilisation equipment suppliers and power plant operators, and supported JMC in developing indicators and benchmarks to measure long-term economic, social, and environmental impact.

The Sihe CMM/CBM utilisation project is now fully commissioned, with a generating capacity of 120MWe of heat and power generation - making it one of the largest CMM/CBM projects in the world.
