Chatterley Whitfield - Stoke-on-Trent

When Birse Civils Ltd were planning to redevelop the Chatterley Whitfield site, we were commissioned to carry out drainage investigation work and prepare a surface water run-off management plan. This included supervisory work during drainage investigations, modelling of the existing surface water drainage network, and the detailed design of a system incorporating SUDS.

The first objective was to determine the current condition of the on-site surface water drainage network and make recommendations for remedial work. The second was to be able to accommodate surface water flows from the future redeveloped site. Restrictions on space and levels due to recent land re-profiling and surface water features within the design were overcome by carefully considering design options, close liaison with the Environment Agency and Severn Trent Water, and site walkover surveys.

The drainage system we developed incorporates a swale, using an original on-site balancing pond and two recently constructed wetland areas to provide attenuation for the one in 100 year plus climate change flow rates from the site. It also provides several stages of water quality treatment and ecological value, fitting aesthetically within the recently developed Heritage Country Park.
