Cammell Laird, Birkenhead - port facility for offshore wind farm

When RWE npower renewables were developing their plans for the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm off the coast of North Wales they commissioned us to carry out detailed site investigations and conditions surveys to help understand and deal with the site constraints and potential costs. Previously an unreclaimed area of the River Mersey, the site had become a major shipyard until its decline and eventual demolition. Now, the ground conditions needed to be right for a port facility with a laydown area, a primary transit route and quayside dock improvements.

As consultant engineers, we were responsible for health and safety duties, ground investigation works, contamination assessment and environmental monitoring, geotechnical assessment, drilling  close to underground services and structures, and appraising derived remediation options. We carried out a wide range of surveys from geophysical, asbestos and structural to photographic, hydrographic and ecological. We also looked after civil engineering designs including quay wall strengthening, crane table, grillages, stillages and six packs.

Our detailed conclusions and recommendations for future redevelopment were presented in a final analysis report, while our site condition report detailed its baseline setting as part of the lease requirements.
