Woodham Golf Course & Country Club

Wardell Armstrong LLP (WA) was appointed to provide support for a planning application for 50 family homes within the grounds of the Woodham Golf and Country Club, as enabling development to provide funding for essential improvement works to the golf course. The County Council had concerns about the potential visual impact of the scheme and WA was instructed by the client to design a woodland belt to screen the proposed development.

WA liaised with Durham County Council’s Landscape Architects to propose and agree tree and shrub species that would be in keeping with the character of the area and achieve a sustainable visual filter between the public road to the north and the proposed housing. Following this, WA prepared a landscape strategy masterplan for the site that included the tree belt and peripheral structure planting, street trees and planting for open spaces and gardens. The scheme also considered the integration of housing and open spaces with adjacent and operational fairways, including SuDS areas, informal tree planting, wild flowers and informal footpaths within the Landscape Strategy Masterplan.

The planning application was submitted to the planning committee in June 2016 and was granted consent.
