The Sill, Northumberland

Wardell Armstrong was commissioned by the Northumberland National Park Authority (NNPA) and the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), to undertake a desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation at Land adjacent to the Once Brewed Youth Hostel and National Park Centre, Northumberland. The work is needed to support a planning application for the construction of a Landscape Discovery Centre. The work was required as the site lies within an area of high archaeological significance; within the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site (Hadrian’s Wall) and adjacent to a number of listed buildings and Scheduled Ancient Monuments. At the north of the site boundary the remains of the Vallum (SAM 26063) associated with the composite defences of Hadrian’s Wall were recorded.
